Under authority of Starfleet’s Tactical Division, Personal phasers come in three types: The small, concealable phaser type-1 (hand phaser), the larger more powerful phaser type 2, and the still larger phaser type 3, also known as the phaser rifle, all of which operate by firing a nadion particle beam formed by passing plasma through a phase emitter, with the intensity and field of the beam producing a wide variety of effects. With the continued advancements in phaser technology, Starfleet Tactical in November 2283 contracted with Sestra Weapons Group, developer of the original Type 2 Phaser (2266) to develop a new hand phaser system, following the issue of Ataiskes Phaser Corporation’s Type 2 - Model 4 Hand Phaser to Starfleet personnel in 2281. By 2284, a Sestra prototype weapon was developed, and a year later, the final design was approved by Starfleet and issued to Starfleet personnel in 2285, once again consisting of the now familiar two piece Phaser 1b / 2b design of its Sestra predecessor and featuring the improved cooling and control system together with a new simpler “speed setting' system of beam force selection.
