Phasers are the most common and standard energy weapon in the arsenal of Starfleet, firing a nadion particle beam formed by passing plasma through a phase emitter, with the intensity and field of the beam producing a wide variety of effects. Starfleet-issue personal hand phasers come in three types - this model represents the original Type 2 phaser co-developed in the mid 23rd century in conjunction with the original Type 1 , and issued to Starfleet personnel in the late 2260's. It consists of a large pistol grip frame incorporation the Type 1 phaser as an integral part of the weapon, but features a more powerful nadion particle beam by augmenting the power of the attached Type 1 phaser with a more powerful emitter crystal, as well as a larger, more powerful interchangeable handle power supply. The original Type 2 phaser has 16 adjustible settings, ranging from stun to heat through disruption to disintegration. Both the original Type 1 / Type 2 phasers were improved upon and updated versions of both were issued to Starfleet personal in 2271 .
