Since the start of virtual learning, students sitting at a desk for the entire day can be easily distracted during class. The purpose of this 3D part is to dedicate a space for the user’s phone, as well as a small compartment for eyeglasses, pens, pencils or other small objects. The phone can be stood up, or on it’s side, which allows the user to access ports on the bottom if needed (charging, headphones). This helps prevent the student from picking up their phone during class, and instead grab school related supplies.
An issue I encountered was the sizing of the fillets. My original fillet size was too large in some areas, but was able to resolve this by using smaller fillets. Another issue I had was determining the size of the cutouts for the phone holder. I made this part based off of my phone size (including the case), but did add some space to accommodate larger phones.
If I could redesign this, I would add a cutout for a charging plug (when the phone is standing up) so this would also act as a charging unit. Another feature would be to add a cutout for a wireless charging pad on the angled part.
A strength 3D printing has with this design is that it saves material compared to subtractive manufacturing since this design had a lot of material cut out. 3D printing this part also allows the user to change up the dimensions easily or add their own twists and features.
