Anycubic 4Max has issues with extruding at least my 4Max does.
First figured out that the tension spring needs to be dialed in good, this solved a lot of my extruding problems but I noticed in long prints it still had issues with clicking extruder, the extruder stepper was getting hot, especially in the closed environment of 4Max, also noticed that the clicking got less when I open the door of the printer.
Measured the VREF and it was 0.86 volt which is not that high, lowered that little bit but the clicking got worse so the only option was to actively cool the extruder stepper motor.
I checked couple mountings here on Thingiverse but nothing fitted on the Nema 17 because of the way how the stepper motor is mounted on 4Max, so I decided to make this model.
Tested couple days and didn’t notice any under extrusion, also if it does I still can up the VREF since it’s actively cooled.
Print as it is, mount a 40x40x10mm Fan and just push it on the Nema 17 at the extruder. Get the 12V from hot end fan, it is almost always on when printing anyways.
Disclaimer: I am not claiming you can solve the ticking problem with this thing, there are several other factors can cause this too.
