I have designed a desk organizer to make remote learning for students more organized and efficient. My design has a phone holder that has a gap for plugging in a charger. The front face is tilted back so the phone wouldn't fall forwards. My design has five pencil holders which are large enough to hold most pencils, pens and other writing utensils. The design has four rectangular holders that can hold small easy to lose office supplies. The front surface is held up by a stand that is simple and makes the design look modern and sharp.
In the process of designing my desk organizer I had some issues on finding what items were the most important, as well as items that are commonly getting lost. After brainstorming I came up with a couple of items which were pencils, a phone, papers, a planner, sticky notes, paper clips, and earphones. Of course, not all of the items were added due to keeping the size small enough for most users. I used the decision matrix to select which items I would use.
Based on the results I chose to focus on the phone and pencils. I made the holders so they can hold paper clips, earphones and sticky notes. Another hardship I faced was where to place the different items and how I should place them. After some thoughts I decided the phone holder will go on the left, then the pencil holders to the right of the phone, and the holders to the right of the organizer. Where the user wants to place the desk organizer would be their choice.
If I could redesign it I might have added slots to hold up papers or folders. I would make the design more appealing by adding more details or making the sharp corners into curves. I also would elevate the phone stand so if it was used for a webcam, it would be elevated to face level. Also a pencil sharpener would be very useful or a lead holder for students who prefer using lead pencils.
3D printing would strengthen my design as it would be cheaper than wooden or metal counterparts making it more convenient for students. It would also be convenient to someone that already owns a 3D printer and doesn't want to spend time designing a desk organizer. By 3D printing it would be possible to send someone the design and have them 3D print it without having to send the physical version, which is especially important if the goal is to be remote. Making the design without a 3D printer would be dangerous, because heating plastic to high temperatures would create fumes, with a 3D printer the plastic is not overheated. Overall, 3D printing the design would add more convenience to the already simple, user friendly, and customizable design.
