The Invaders Space Ship
Poor David Vinsent; nobody ever believed him that aliens were trying to conquer the Earth. During the two seasons of the television show, The Invaders, Vinsent tried to convince humanity that aliens from a dying world were attempting to make Earth their world. While a "believer" would popup in each episode almost everyone else thought he was a crackpot.
In the first episode, Vinsent is trying to find a short cut alongside an abandoned diner when he witnesses the landing of a strange craft. That craft is this project's subject: The Invaders Space Ship.
Originally manufactured in plastic model kit form by Aurora Plastics Corporation, this space ship was an instant model maker's classic. It was designated Aurora Model Kit Number 813, released in 1968, and I think the retail price was $1.00. I purchased and built this kit during the heyday of the TV series. Unfortunately, my "The Invaders Space Ship" model was lost many years ago.
In this project, I've attempted to create a "part-for-part" replica of this Aurora Model Kit Number 813. I know that I've made two glaring errors, however. First, I'm pretty sure that the original model was larger than this version. Although the Aurora kit was scaled at 1/72, there was no "real" space ship to use for obtaining working measurements. You could say that 1/72 scale was a fanciful scale.
My second error is the omission of the scale figures that accompanied the Aurora space ship model. You could also throw into this self-recrimination error bin the lack of a slight dome on the upper surface of the Top piece. But my memory of this feature is fuzzy so I decided to omit it.
I've included a photograph using a LEGO MiniFig for "scale" next to a completed space ship model.
Complete parts list:
Main_Body
Bottom_Body
Foot x5
Light x5
Walls_Panels
Top
Seat_Stalls_Ladders
Note that you will print one of each part except the Foot and Light. Each of these parts will require five duplicates. For an accurate reproduction of the Aurora kit, the Light part should be printed in a red transparent filament (e.g., Taulman t-glase). Also, you must add support for printing the Bottom_Body and the Seat_Stalls_Ladders. Finally, use the Wall_Templates PDF for printing paper decals that can be glued to the inside the interior walls. A thin application of wood glue is ideal for adding these paper decals to the space ship.
Enjoy this model, but stay alert for "people" with funny shaped pinky fingers--they might be The Invaders!
