A Soap Box Derby racer, built and piloted by Peter Voronovsky of Schenectady, NY, that in 1951 won the Shell Oil Company Award for the best-constructed car. Peter was awarded a set of Stanley Tools for his achievement. In 2003 the still extant racer went on display at the Saratoga Automobile Museum in Saratoga Springs, NY, in an exhibit called Soap Box Derby: Yesterday and Today. The car was on loan from Peter's son. This was a well constructed racer. The design of the car was a familiar configuration: a high, curved fore-apron and much lower rear, mid-height sides that enclosed the driver, and axles fitted with aerodynamic wings. The tapered body was narrow, with the driver sitting slightly crouch-forward. Construction was in wood, with Masonite and lath used to make the skin of the body. Steering hardware was enclosed entirely within the vehicle. This model is designed from photos of the car. Measurements and interior workings are estimated. The wheels are AASBD issue, measuring 12' with regulation wheelbase. The livery shows the sponsor of the car, Carl Settle, a Firestone distributor located in Schenectady, the car's number on race day, and Peter's name.
