The IBM 1407 Console Inquiry Station was a desk-sized I/O typewriter / printer computer terminal designed to communicate with the IBM 1401 computer system (1959), using a then conventional typewriter moving carriage and type bar mechanism to operate. Because the scope of applications processed by 1401 systems had increased after its introduction, there was a need for some additional means of communication with the system. The IBM 1407 Console Inquiry Station was designed to fulfill that need. Located adjacent to the IBM 1401 Processing Unit console, the inquiry station could be used for reading data from core storage or for inserting data or program steps, if necessary, into 1401 core storage. This model depicts the IBM 1407 console.
