The IBM 1625 Core Storage Unit was an external peripheral connected to the IBM 1620 Computer Data Processing System, a low-cost second generation (transistor based) scientific / technology based computer in service between 1959 and 1970. Designed to work with the IBM 1620 Model 2 (1962), the 1625, like its’ predecessor, the IBM 1623 Core Storage Unit used on the IBM 1620 Model 1, was an outwardly identical cabinet unit designed to house core storage computer memory used by the Model 2 computer. However, unlike the Model 1, basic core memory was entirely removed from the main computer console and all system memory was now held within one of three 1625 models: the 1625-1 with 20,000 positions of core storage; the 1625-2 with 40,000 positions of core storage; and the 1625-3 with 60,000 positions of core storage. The model presented here represents the IBM Core Storage Unit.
