The IBM 1302 Disk Storage Unit was a dual model fixed-disk hard disk drive system introduced in September of 1963 as an update to the previous 1301 hard drive system. Designed to interface with the same IBM 7000 series mainframes and the IBM 1410 Data Processing System using the IBM 7631 File Control Unit as the previous 1301 system, the 1302 utilized the same twenty-five x 24-inch diameter fixed disk modules to record data, but continuing advances in recording technology quadrupled the 1301’s data storage capacity per disk module, resulting in the 1302”s single module Model 1with a storage capacity of 117 MB for the 7000 series (110 MB with the 1410 system), and the dual vertically stacked module Model 2 with 234 MB of storage. Using the IBM 7631 File Control Unit, as many as five 1302 drives could connect to a computer system, providing a maximum data capacity of over 1.1 GB. This model represents a dual module 1302 Model 2, together with the 7631 File Control Unit.
