In the news this week: Tata Wants to sell off Port Talbot Steel Works.
When I was a lil'Engineer, straight out of School, I went to work in Newport, Wales, at this amazing place called Llanwern Steel Works. It blew my mind. There was no better introduction to Heavy Engineering.
In a hot and cold relationship they occasionally sponsored me through Uni (Imperial) and sometimes let me down.
It was complicated. But it made me the engineer I am today.
Llanwern was a brilliantly designed Steelworks, Ore and Coal entered one end, it was Sintered, Turned to Coke, Went through a Blast Furnace, a Steel refining plant, Continously Casted (solidified into a bloody long strip, let cool, sent through a slab yard, through Reheat Ovens (my favourite!) through a 7-Stand Hot Mill, Coilers, "Pickle Line", Through the 5-Stand Cold Mill, Coiled again, Annealed, then Finished at the Zodiac Line (Galvanized).
Llanwern was the only Steelworks in the world were the Steel never double-backed. It only ever travelled the one way.
Llanwern announced the end of Steelmaking (the heavy end) in 2000, and everything upstream of Hotmill was closed. Concast Etc. were removed. This is after the Concast from Ravenscraig Steelworks was installed at Llanwern. Both Concast 1 and Concast 2 were 8m Radius Concasts, as opposed to standard 12m, so 25%ile inclusions actually happened at 17%ile.
Sadly, had Ravenscraig been built on the other side of Queensway to the main Llanwern Site, then Llanwern would still be fully operational today instead of the Finishing Strip mill.
I left just before the sale to Tata. I said it was bad news, and Tata would eventually sell off or close the Uk operation.
They've kept it going a long time and I have respect for Tata, but this was inevitable.
Respect to the owners, Tata Steel, but I want to show British Steel - We haven't forgotten you, and we know in 2 years time you will all be super-profitable again. Ladies and Gents, the 10 year Steel Cycle: we will be back.
I am now, and have always been a "Man of Steel".
NEWPORT!
