Ryu Ki-jung, executive director of the Korea Employers Federation, who is a member of the user committee, said, citing the survey results, in which 61 percent of users and 37 percent of workers said the minimum wage should be frozen, adding, "Isn't the survey showing that the rapid increase in the minimum wage has had a negative impact not only on users but also workers?"

As for the absence of the workers' committee members, Ryu added, "I feel as if I couldn't come because of the labor situation as usual and I look forward to returning to the next meeting."

All the members of the user committee were absent from the seventh plenary session on July 2 in protest of the rejection of a bill that would apply different levels of different industries. The labor and management sectors have once put the Minimum Wage Council into bankruptcy.

A full meeting of the Minimum Wage Council is also scheduled for May 10 and 11. The Minimum Wage Council plans to conduct intensive deliberations at the remaining meeting to determine next year's minimum wage level.

However, it remains to be seen whether the minimum wage committee will go as planned if the workers' absence is prolonged.The Ministry of Employment and Labor says the vote should be made by July 15, considering the time it takes to file objections ahead of the final notification after the Minimum Wage Council's vote on the minimum wage for next year.
