國立台灣美術館舊稱為「台灣省立美術館」，原本隸屬於台灣省政府， 1988年開館營運，1999年改隸行政院文化建設委員會，成為國家級唯一的美術館。 1999年百年罕見的「九二一大地震」讓國美館遭到災損因而閉館整復建五年，2004年7月3日重新開館。強調開闊性與親和性的空間，改變過去美術館剛硬且嚴肅的傳統意象，積極營造二十一世紀美術館兼具藝術知性與休閒功能的嶄新面貌。 The museum, formerly known as the Taiwan Museum of Art, was founded in 1988. During the initial period, it was under the Taiwan Provincial Government. In 1999, it came under the supervision for the Council of Cultural Affairs, Executive Yuan, and became Taiwan's only national museum of fine arts. In the same year, the 9/21 Earthquake shook the country and, for the following 5 years, the NTMFA underwent reconstruction. On July 3, 2004, the museum reopened its doors to the public. The NTMFA is a departure from fine art museums of the bygone era, whose image tends to be stern and serious. Today, at the dawn of the 21st century, the museum space is at once open and intimate.
