The Bird-Class Destroyers were designed in the late 1930’s as an anti-ship/submarine convoy escort ship. The ship was built around 16 large torpedoes as the main armament (equivalent to the Long Lance). The Secondary Armament for the Bird-Class in this case would have been the 6ea 125mm Rifled guns. Added throughout WWII were the AA Suites. The Ship depicted below is Bird-Class Hull #9, D-64 Birigarro. This is its configuration in 1945, at the end of the war. By then an R5 BigEye Radar Assembly has been fitted and the ship had been tasked to the Pacific Ocean. The D-64 Birigarro was laid down in 1942, and entered service in 1943. It served with distinction in the Atlantic and was tasked to the Pacific in 1945. Post war, it returned to port, where it was then assigned to the North Atlantic Squadron. It proceeded to serve in the OGN until 1982, when it was mothballed, eventually being scrapped in 1994. The Bird-class’s secret that lead to its very long service life was an engine compartment was easy to access. The Steam Turbines that were originally installed were replaced by Gas Turbines in the early 60’s. These were test beds for the OGN Fleet, and it proved to be a good match (after some teething issues). Of the 12 Bird-Class Destroyers, 4 were sold to different Navies in the early 80’s and 1 is still in Active Service. - Top Speed is 40+ knots. - 6ea 125mm Auto Firing Dual Purpose Radar directed - 16ea Type 19 Long Range Torpedoes - 14ea 40mm License Built Bofors Style AA guns - 6ea 20mm License Built Oerlikon Style AA Guns, in a single Turrets of 6ea - 2ea Racks of Depth Charges, each with 12ea Depth Charges This Destroyer Design is a bit of a mashup between the USN Sumner-Class and the IJN Kagero-Class All the parts on the Birigarro were built by me, ryksuga, with the exception to the Props, which were derived by A.W.’s “five bladed ship’s propeller.” I just can’t figure out the props on ships, dammit! Another big, highly detailed model, enjoy. #battle ship, #battleship, #combat ship, #dreadnaught, #dreadnought, #Naval, #Occitan, #Occitania, #oerlikon, #OGN, #surface ship, #turrent, #turret, #world war II, # WW2, #WWII, #Destoyer, #Sumner Class, #Kagero Class, #Birigarro, #Bird Class, #Bird-Class, #125mm, #naval destroyer, #destroyer, #torpedo, #Bofors
