This project consists of the completion of 15 spacious connected homes for living and working on the Eneco site between Bautersemstraat and Esperantoplein. The flexible configuration of living needs in combination with work requirements – spread over three floors – is at the heart of the design. Residents have the option of using the ground floor, including the in-built garage, as business space, or of using the whole building as a home. The garage can be used either in combination with the business space, or with the living area, and the front can be given its own special design, depending on the nature of the business: closed, a glass front, or a combination of the two. Both facades on the ground floor can be altered, for residential purposes. Upstairs, the living area is divided over two floors. The transparent entrance gives residents a wide view of the street from inside the open stairwell. The daylight comes in here through small sawtooth roofs, with one steep glass and one faintly sloping surface up on the flat roof. Together with the large square windows, this outward facing wall towards Bautersemstraat is very much a ‘social’ facade. A large roof terrace on Esperantoplein – the sunny side – with a narrow strip for an optional conservatory offers a year-round view of a green patio. This side is more private, more personal.
