Woodchip Rise Watch

BACKGROUND:
A common issue with open skeleton movement watches is their difficulty to be read. All the gears, springs and supporting structure cross over with the hands and numbers to form a bit of a confusing view. While they look very cool, they're not always the most user friendly of watches.
A primary focus when designing this watch, was to combine that amazing mechanical view of the watch movement, with an intuitive, simple to read display.
SUN AND MOON:
We categories our time into day and night. From the time it takes for the sun to rise and set, to the appearance of the moon in the night sky, and back to the rising of the sun. This idea dictates how we divide our time, and how we run our lives.
TIME DISPLAY:
The display of the watch takes this idea of night and day, and applies it to the abstract concepts of hours, and telling the time. From 5am, the sun (yellow) will rise on the left side of the watch face to move around the clock face to then set at 5pm on the right side. At this point, the moon will rise on the left, and follow the same path around. The process of both moon and sun rising and setting once, represents a full day. The complex mechanism visible on the inside of the watch face symbolizes the earth, with the sun and moon appearing to rise and set over it. There's something quite peaceful about the always constant, slowly rotating sun and moon rising and falling over the excited, ever-changing, earth.
The top half of the outside of the watch face is split into 12 segments, each containing an hour number, from 6 - 5. As either the sun or moon travels around the top half of the watch face, they highlight the segments (and containing numbers). When a segment is fully highlighted, the number within determines the hour of the time. If the sun is producing the highlight, it's daytime, and if the moon - night time.
The minutes travel on the inside of the hours, but continue around the full circle of the face. The numbers are located where traditional watches show theirs, i.e. at 5 minute intervals. Instead of showing the hour numbers, they show the minutes (00 - 05 - 10 ... etc.) These are highlighted in a similar way, only with a single, white, fading disk.
MECHANICAL:
To achieve the alternating background of night and day, the watch uses a 24 hour movement, where the hour hand is attached to a disk that runs around the outside of the watch face with the image of the fading sun and moon printed at 180 degrees of one another. Above this disk is another stationary one, with the 12 segment shapes cut into it. As the hour disk rotates behind this, the segments get filled, then fade out with time. Because these segment cuts only take up the top half of the watch face, only one colour (sun or moon) is visible at any one time. The numbers are simply printed onto the rear side of the glass above the segments.
The minutes are displayed in the same way, only with a single background colour, and with the segments continuing around the full watch face.
With the numbers being black, the segment cut disk in black, and the hour and minute disks fading from their colours into black; the numbers seem invisible until the sun/moon/minute appear behind them, and only then are they highlighted. This adds something to the depth of the face, giving the feeling of deep space around the mechanism.
Please see the exploded face render to get a better idea of the method.
AETHETICS:
The primary focus of this watch is the time display itself. So when designing the housing, I wanted to avoid any features or qualities that would take the attention away. The result is a simple, (hopefully!) elegant watch that wouldn't look out of place in a formal environment, or just every-day use.
The lightly brushed steel of the front bezel bring out the depth of the black face, and contrast nicely with the black stained, high polished wood case. The backside bezel and crown are also of the same brushed stainless steel. The Woodchip logo has been frost etched into the rear side crystal to avoid cluttering the front face, but providing a clean visual as to the maker of the product. The black leather strap with stainless steel highlights follows the simple design direction of the rest of the watch.
STRAP AND CLASP:
I wanted to avoid clutter as much as possible, so decided against a regular clasp. The leather strap, has a spring steel core that tries to force itself open from the watch area. One of the arms has a mushroom shaped 'hook' riveted to the end, while the other has keyhole shaped slots cut into it. To attach to the wrist, one must force the strap to close in on itself, place the hook through the desired hole, and release. The force of the spring steel will lock the hook into the hole, and prevent the strap from opening.
NOTES:
The sun and moon effect will only work with a 24 hour movement. These are available, but if the 12 hour movement must be used, the moon would have to be removed. However, the method of highlighting the numbers would remain the same. They would then run the full circle of the face (like the minutes), and be highlighted by the sun. This would still produce a nice effect, but more of the appearance of the sun revolving around the earth.
I based the model of the watch movement on the Tourby Unitas 6498 Art Deco. It's by no means exact, just all done by eye. The gearing ratios and placements are probably also all wrong, but the method is correct. Feel free to take it out, and use it in your renderings if you want to go for a skeleton movement as well.
To help with the renderings, I've created extra parts for areas which would be printed/etched (i.e. the numbers, the sun/moon/minute, the logo, etc.). If this were to be produced, they would obviously not be separated, only printed onto the attached part (see exploded view).
