Wonder Woman played by Lynda Carter on the TV series of the same name, that ran from 1975 to 1979.
Staying true to the comics' early source material, Carter's Wonder Woman costume featured the traditional star-spangled tights, golden eagle and red and white knee-high boots.
All the elements that made the comic book counterpart iconic are there, and though represented in bright '70s spandex or polyester the effect is well, effective.
Little realism informed the '70s TV series, leading to an outfit that didn't quite make sense, but remains iconic. Though Wonder Woman ran just three seasons, the superhero showed off a wide array of looks. There are some subtle differences between the first season iteration and the later look.
There are more stars on her shorts, of varying sizes, which gives it more pop. The gold eagle on her red bustier is more avian and condensed than the one from seasons 2 & 3.
Despite the show being a hit, it was not renewed by ABC as it’s World War II setting was too costly to produce. So when CBS picked up the series the following year it made a number of changes including the era. The show now took place in the modern-day 1970s. Another modification was the look of Wonder Woman herself, as she received a brand new costume. The New Adventures of Wonder Woman (as it was retitled) changed the costume’s eagle design and switched the classic silver bracelets for golden ones. The cut of the outfit was altered for a tighter fit that now revealed more skin. The biggest difference between wartime Wonder Woman and her 70’s self was the chest plate. Back in her WWII guise, she had a winged eagle design whereas her later golden emblem featured palm tree style gold stripes. Although the newer costume was more flattering, it instantly dates this interpretation into the decade of disco. In the comics it would finally evolve into the “W” logo we know and love today.
