Wilder School

The Wilder School is located on the west side of Norwich Ave., and is placed between Locust and Division Streets, it was built in the year 1912. The building is placed on a level lot with many large pine trees along Norwich Ave. The teachers that drive park in the lot to the north of the school and for the kids there is a playground to the west. It was the second school to be built on this site. The building is made of decorative brick panels and are bordered by header and soldier bricks which are white. In the front leading into the school there is a raised concrete stoop with concrete sidewalls. Above the entrance to the school there is a tripartite window with a crowning horizontal stone panel inscribed Wilder School. The second school was built after the previous school was condemned by the State Board of Health. The designers of the school were Hurd and Gove, architects; W.J. Mewer was the contractor for the job. This building was built at the time when Hartford was rapidly expanding. The enrollment of the new school grew from a meager 142 (1907-8) to 202 (1911-12); through 1923 the enrollment ran steady at 208. Today the Wilder School is used mainly for the RAP program (Regional Alternative Program). The Wilder students that used to attend the Wilder School now attend the newly built Dothan Brook School located on Hartford Ave. (US Rte. 5) closer to Norwich, VT.
