Incinerator used by the sawmill that operated here for many years. Now an abandoned historic structure. .. .. In the past, when loggers and sawmills had zillions of tons of wood waste to dispose of, and the wood pellet stove had not been invented, these incinerators were used to burn it all. Many were much larger than this, and logging communities remember the smoky haze that lingered for weeks. .. .. In the 1960s and 70s air quality standards caused many of these structures to be adandoned in place. Newer units engineered to burn hotter were designed and built, but some of them were never used because of the timing in the wood waste market. .. .. There is now a significant market for wood waste to be made into pellets, alcohol, and other forms of fuel. Forest products producers can sell this material, instead of disposing of it. These so-called wigwam burners (also teepee burner), from their shape resemblance to Native American structures, still stand rusting in many towns in America. .. They were designed with similar shapes and airflow patterns, in a variety of sizes, and more or less steel mesh dome surface.
