This is a viewcatcher, or a simple viewfinder for several fotographic film formats (24x36, 4x5 and 6x6). Simply open the slide until the mark of the format desired, and take a look through the window. I often use it with my 4x5 large format camera before take it off from my bag. The equivalent view to the focal my 150 mm lens (in 4x5 format) is produced by separating the viewfinder 4 fingers of my hand (not counting the thumb) from the eyebrow of the eye with which I look through the viewfinder.
You must first test next to your camera to find the measurement equivalent to the lens you are using. The advantage is that you can looking for frames or crops without having to mount your field camera on the tripod. If, for example, you work with 3 lenses (90mm, 150mm and 300mm, in my case), using the viewcatcher for the 150mm lens, you will already know which lens to use before you even take your camera out of the bag.
The viewcatcher is somewhat larger than a credit card and easy to carry in your pocket, even during a walk without your camera, looking for landscaspe frames for the next day.
