In 1849 Samuel Pope, a well known Gawler businessman acquired two acres of land on which the Wheatsheaf Inn was built. At this time it was the only hotel between Gawler and Lyndoch and was very popular as a stopping off place during the Barossa Valley Gold Rush of 1868. Records of the inn are some-what scanty but several licensees kept trade here. During these years New Year's Day functions were said to have been held in the adjoining paddock. These were very popular with families spending the day here with such sports as 'Greasing the Pig' taking place. In 1900 the Von Boeckman family bough the Inn. Mrs Sophie Von Boeckman ran the business following her husband's death when he fell from a cart on the Tanunda Road. Mrs. Von Boeckman became quite famous for her sugar beer made on the premises in great quantities. The Hotel finally ceased trading as an inn in 1905. Mr and Mrs Robert Gordon purchased the then derelict building along with the two acres of land in 1972. With much imagination, flair and a great deal of hard work turned it into the Wheatsheaf Inn Tea Rooms of today. #Hotel_Inn_Stone_cottage
