This is a model of the old rock Works Progress Administration-built Schoolhouse in Webster, North Carolina, which was originally constructed in 1936, replacing an older two-story wooden structure built in 1912 that stood next door, which was subsequently demolished. The building contained modern conveniences, such as steam heat, electric lighting, and indoor plumbing, and contained multiple classrooms for all grade levels, a Gymnasium, Office, Lunch Room and Library. The building served the Webster and Savannah communities as a High School, and the Webster community (which was re-incorporated as a town in 1953) as a Elementary/Middle School until 1960, when the High School program was consolidated with the High School at Sylva, forming Sylva-Webster High School, which has been known as Smoky Mountain High School since 1988. After 1960, the building served as Webster Elementary School, which remained in the building until 1973, when it was consolidated with the Elementary programs at Sylva and Savannah to form Fairview Elementary School, located behind Smoky Mountain High School. Since 1980, the building has been home to Southwestern Child Development Center, a preschool program, and has had some unfortunate renovations that closed up the large windows and doorways in favor of smaller ones, and obscured the high ceilings. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and has long been the largest building by floor area in the town of Webster. Feel free to use this model as you see fit, on the condition that you contact me first so I know where it is being used (I'd love to see it wherever it ends up), and give me a mention or credit wherever it is used or published. #WorksProgressAdministration #NewDeal #HistoricArchitecture #School
