Hi guys,
Link to project page: https://wrenchtodrive.blogspot.com/2020/06/project-baja-racer.html
See it running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NokxiYYNk0
This is my SCX10 clone rock racer project, the W2D IV - Baja Racer. It works pretty well and I haven't had any breakage running as long as I show some respect for the nature of 3D printed parts.
The chassis is symmetrical and set up to run a front axle with an axle mounted servo.
A clone SCX10 transmission and mount fit fine.
The rear shock mounts are different than the fronts only to include the body mounts (note you can use the version with post or without).
The separate rear body mounts can be installed using hot glue and zip ties for easy replacement in case of breakage.

I used hook and loop (velcro) on the rock sliders (under the cage mounted rails) to secure the cage originally but switched to the post setup because it's less hassle.
The chassis is setup for a shorty battery pack.
A long pack works well with the 12428 gearbox, but the Axial transmission is too tall and makes it dodgy to run a 5000mah pack.

The battery tray and electronics tray mount to the frame rails and can be swapped front to back.
I included an ESC mount that attached to the battery tray, which I used in an alternate setup that didn't work out very well (big battery, ESC where the shorty battery sat)

You'll need a set of axles, links, shocks, transmission and drive shafts. Yeah, that's not nothing. If you check out my other projects you'll see you can use the parts from a WLToys 12428 or something similar pretty easily with your biggest problem being mounting the servo to the axle (I will probably make a servo mount for my 12428 solid axle at some point, but not soon). Also, stay tuned for a TRX-4 based project coming soon. Jenny's RC on EBay is a good source for TRX-4 crawler parts and they can be had for LESS than SCX10 clone parts at times. TRX-4 2Spd transmission, solid links, axles and rails for cheap Chinese part prices? Not a bad idea, I'd say. The only thing that ain't cheap is the axles, as you might expect.
This project hasn't gotten much love when I've posted previews, so I'm not putting much more effort into it unless that changes. I think I'll be adapting the cage to work with other cars over the winter and more chassis mods are likely to follow to make it more versatile.
As always, use at your won risk.
Wrench to drive or drive to wrench?
