A voronoi chess set which allows the placement of magnets in the base, additional space is added such that the magnet can be covered with a cap or some piece of cloth if preferred. The voronoi effect gives the pieces a unique look, which cannot be easily created by other making technologies. Because I think some people will prefer a solid base, I added those as well. The pieces are identical, only the base is different, in contrast to the hollow bases, these can be printed without support. I used ferrite magnets with a diameter of 20mm and a thickness of 3mm and 3D printed a small cap for the bottom to make the magnets invisible. Additionally I build and painted a wooden chessboard which allows the board to be magnetic or not, depending on the configuration. Material Quantity: ranging from 7 to 15 gram per piece
Dimensions: King 36.3x36.3x85.9mm, Pawn 28.8x28.8x42.9mm Printing:
I suggest printing the knight in 2 pieces (body and base) and glue them together. This is because the nose of the knight requires support. I rotated the upper part of the knight such that the nose was pointing straight down, this allowed the support of the nose to be on the buildplate instead of on the knight itself. If you print the knight with like that with the base, the layer lines are clearly visible under an angle, which i disliked. I added a complete knight to the set in case someone wants to print it as 1. Maybe tree support is a possibility, I would be curious to know if someone made it work. It might be a good idea print the knight in the air (with support), because the single point of contact might of less quality as it is the only part of the end product that is attached to the build plate. I would not recommend scaling down too much, because the pieces are a bit fragile. They can easily handle play regular play, but dropping them on the ground will often break them... Minimal support is required at the bottom when using the hollow bases, I suggest to not fully fill the hole with support material, because this is hard to remove. I used a support blocker in the middle to allow easy removal. checkers dame chess bishop pawn tournament king play knight board championship game adult hobbies sla games toys voronoi games toys board games
