Reconstructed skull of a presumed male individual between 20 and 30 years old at death from the VII CE necropoles of Campochiaro, Italy. This skull is notable for displaying a rather unusual depression on the occipital bone above the inion (fossetta soprainiaca, back of the skull). Because of several “central asian” characteristics present at these necropoles, this anomaly could be the result of artificial cranial deformation during infancy, a practice widespread amongst Huns, Ostrogoths, and other late antique “steppe” populations. Another possible interpretation is ontogenetic dimorphism, caused by anomalous fetal development of cartilaginous bone. - Vicenne, Campochiaro, Molise, t. 112 - Buy Royalty Free 3D model by TonyGee777
