Two-Story One-Pillar Pagoda

This is a two-story pagoda that I designed as a scaled-down piece of hardscape for a Japanese garden. It is loosely based on the 'Chùa Một Cột' Bhuddist temple, built in 1049 in Viet Nam over a Lotus pond. I wanted this to be a multi-tiered structure (where the original is only one story) to help bring in the overall 'feel' of an Asian-style garden. Because the end-product will most likely be cut on a CNC machine, the shingles could not be a pattern, but rather had to be individually constructed to provide relief for the cutting bit. The curvature of the roof, combined with the tipped-up corners made aligning these shingles particularly challenging. The shingles are designed based on an old architecture where they used structural bamboo as the roofing trusses, and the ceramic-fired shingles would be an 'S' shape, going under and over each of the bamboo trusses to channel water off the eaves. The peaks of the roofs sport ten dragons, seemingly coming out of the 'water' blue-shingled roof. On the lower peaks, these dragons are showing fascination for the spheres that tip the corners which jut out and upward.
