Saw a video of a dual VXL setup, so I though I would try to make one myself. Right now it is using a single Mamba Monster 2 2650kv but I will be testing it with 2 VXL motors when i get another motor plate, and maybe 2 Mamba monsters for some even more crazy speed. This is also just a proof of concept, and ideally would be machined out of aluminum which is what is shown in the first few pictures.
Uses stock mounting holes and screws, but you will need to cut out some of the plastic on the chassis for the second motor mount, as well as relocate the battery and mount the second speed controller somewhere. The second motor is attached with a second mounting plate (TRA7490) that is reverse mounted and extra screws (TRA2550 and TRA5142) and a locknut (TRA2745). Also, two shoulder screws are needed for the picot point on the motor mount (TRA3642X). MAKE SURE YOUR MOTOR SCREW IS VERY TIGHT. The MM2 likes to loosen up and strip the spur gear. Ive added a mount for the stock bearing, as well as a 10x19x5mm bearing variant. The bearing can be sourced from traxxas (TRA4889) or from here for cheaper: http://www.kingheads.com/product_info.php?products_id=934
EDIT 5/5/15: Added a slot for the screw so you can actually mount 2 motors using a reverse mount on the opposite side.
EDIT 5/16/15: Received and installed a machined aluminum version. Testing will be happening as soon so i can compare 2 vxl's to a single MM2.
FINAL EDIT 6/27/15: After some testing, the dual VXL still seems less powerful than the MM2. The design works well in aluminum but it just is not as easy as a single motor. The batteries needed to be secured to the VG racing chassis brace. I used zip ties which broke on impact with a relatively small crash. The only issue I had with the dual VXL was that even after calibrating, one esc would be braking while the other was neutral throttle. Maybe this could be fixed by calibrating both at the same time? The other big difference between the dual motor vs MM2 was how much more the 2 VXLs weighed.
Testing setup is as follows:
Dual VXL:
2x 5400mah 3s lipo Venom batteries in parallel
2x 19t pinion (stock 60mph+ speed pinion)
54t spur
MM2:
2x 2650mah 4s lipo turnigy nano tech
13t pinion
40t spur
If anyone has anymore questoins, please feel free to ask
