This beautiful carved totem pole stands overlooking Tumwater Falls in Tumwater Washington.
All pictures were shot from ground level with Nikon D5000 and a Nikor 18-55 set to 18mm.
Examining the model carefully reveals some interesting things about the photoscan process. The right side of the pole has much better detail than the left. This is because the sun was shining from the right making the pictures shot from that side much better than the back-lit photos shot of the other side. Also the quality of the scan deteriorates as you move up the pole. This is because the pictures shot close to the ground were shot from much closer, producing better data than the more distant shots of the top. I did some retouching of the eagle wings and the base of the eagle which was not visible from the ground.
We talked about this thing and a whole lot more about 3d printing on the 3D Printing Today podcast available on iTunes, Stitcher radio or direct from the source at http://threedprintingtoday.libsyn.com/
