Gears of Innovation Challenge

This version of my X-Gear Fidget widget was an attempt in adding a few more Gears, because one can never have enough – right?

OK, let’s break this down and start at the top….

This first level of three gears are co-dependent and are driven by turning the center gear. I believe the ratio when I started was 2.5:1. I made adjustments to the gear teeth and outside diameters for the 3D printing process – crossing my fingers I got the spacing right.

The two small outside gears connect the entire assembly together. These drive the larger X shaped gears with internal teeth and then attach to the handle/base.

In the middle layer, we have the X-Gears. These oddly shaped gears are co-dependent and examples of how gear design goes beyond standard circle shapes.

Lastly, we have the base and handle for the entire device. I designed this as minimalistic as I could and shaped it after a spacecraft. It’s embossed with an X representing the entire concept of my design. Oh, and I added a touch of innovation at the bottom, as a throwback to the challenge.

Some background on this design…

I enjoy having a story behind a design and this one is rather unique. My first attempt at this device spawned conversation after conversation on 3D printing and what was possible. And this wasn’t with Engineers, I mean come on – 3D printing has been around for a long time. It was with people less technical – like my Mom and Dad.

I incorporated a more complex gearing system and it required a redesign from my other submission.

If you like the design, take a second and support my creations and exposure in this competition. Thanks in advance….
