El Palacio real de Madrid (Royal Palace of Madrid), also known as 'Palacio de Oriente' (East Palace), is the official residence of the King of Spain in the city of Madrid and is used for State occasions, however the private residence of the royal family is the Palace of Zarzuela. The site of the palace dates from a 10th-century fortress. It burned in 1734, and then the King Philip V ordered a new palace built on the same location.
