By the 3nd century B.C. Rome was well into its Republican era and the Roman legionary soldier was continuing to evolve. However, Rome still held to a class system where military service was only open to citizen landowners responsible for supplying their own arms. Soldiers were divided into (4) types: The front lines were manned by the velites, the youngest and poorest solders equiped with 3 ft. circular wicker shields, 4 ft. javelins, a short sword and a helmet. Behind them came the hastati, young soldiers armed with the long oblong scutum (shield), heavy and light pila (spears), a short sword, and helmet. Behnd them came the principes, older men armed similarly to the younger hastati, and finally at the rear were the triarii, the seasoned veterans having the best equipment such as chain mail armor and leg greaves along with their long shields, helmets, short swords, and long thrusting spears called hasta. Since armor varied depending on the individual soldier's status, this model depicts a young Roman hastati equiped with scutum, a Montefortino helmet, both heavy and light pila, a short sword, chest and back plate body armor, military caligae (boots), and the standard dull red woolen tunic.
