The Roane Building once stood in Whittier, North Carolina and was the biggest Department Store west of Asheville in the state of North Carolina when it was built in 1898. Built by R. J. Roane, the building was originally home to Roane & Varner's Store (later the R. J. Roane Co. Store) and Whittier Drug Co. The town of Whittier boomed from the 1880s until the Stock Market Crash took the logging industry and town down with it. The town suffered a massive exodus of residents from a combination of the Depression, a flood in 1940, and World War II. R. J. Roane's Store closed for good in 1937 and never reopened. In the ensuing years, the building has undergone a transformation. The Drug Company section of it was demolished, along with the second floor, and what remains has become a house. Today, very little remains of the thriving town Whittier used to be. Updated with improved model quality (actual windows rather than flat panels and a realistic time period appropriate roof) as well as chimneys to make it more realistic and much better overall. Feel free to use this model as you see fit, on the condition that you contact me first so I know where it is being used (I'd love to see it wherever it ends up), and give me a mention or credit wherever it is used or published. #Storefront #DrugStore #HistoricArchitecture #VanishedAmerica
