The Firka Fortress - Chania, Island of Crete

This ancient fortress, located at the harbor of Chania, Crete, was constructed by the Venetians around 1538 as part of a defensive system for the port of Chania. An interesting defensive feature was a large chain that ran from the fortress to the base of the lighthouse across the channel to block entrance to the port. Although the Venetians built the fortress it is now known by its Turkish name Firka (barracks), so named by the Turks who later occupied the island.
