Invene, Dr. Peter Baek (an anesthesiologist), and MB Innovations (mbinnovations.com) have designed and tested a piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) comprising a commercially available snorkeling mask, a ventilator filter, and a custom 3D printed adapter. Emerson gave us feedback on our design, helped us cut the cost of the component in half, and allowed us to 3D print the parts at cost.

We have verified that this mask has passed the fit test performed on users wearing FDA-approved N95 respirators. We have also measured the amount of CO2 present inside the mask when donned by a user and found that it increases by only 1% above normal, indicating that it vents expired air. This mask is designed to work with all filters which have a 22mm inner diameter port. We have included an example filter if you are unsure of which one to use.

Our adapter has been printed on two different models of printer: an Ender 3 Pro using PLA plastic, and a Stratasys Fortus 400mc using ABS plastic.

For the Ender 3 Pro:

Extruder temperature: 220 degrees C
Bed temperature:50 degrees C
Tip diameter: 0.005'
Layer height: 0.005'
The print required approximately three hours to complete.

For the Stratasys Fortus 400mc:

Tip diameter: 0.007'
Layer height: 0.007'
The print required approximately three hours to complete.

The model file has been designed so that no supports are necessary, which also means that no post-print processing is required.

The adapter requires a commercially available Danco brand #35 O - ring to function properly.

To assemble the mask, follow these three steps:

1. Push the printed adapter over the snorkel mask's top slot-shaped port until it touches the ridge protruding all around the port.
2. Stretch the O - ring over the adapter's circular port and let it snap into place in the groove 3 mm below the top of the adapter's circular port.
3. Push the filter's 22mm port over the adapter's circular port until its bottom contacts the sloped transition that leads to the adapter's slot shaped snorkel port.

After assembly we strongly recommend that this mask be fit-tested on the individual user who will be wearing the mask. Instructions for fit testing can be found here:

We are confident in this mask's ability to filter particulate contaminants at least as well as commercially available N95 respirators. However, we stress that this mask is NOT FDA approved as a medical device. This mask is intended to be used when no other option is available, such as when no N95-rated respirators are available or when personnel must reuse existing respirators. Use at your own risk.
