Years ago in college I took a sculpture/3D Construction type Art class. One of the projects was to make a kind of Unit - a 3D shape out of like paper, or cardboard or such. But, make MANY of them. Then, take all those pieces and create a sculpture with it. Too bad I lost that sculpture over the years.
So - I've been wanting to do something like this via 3D Printing. Then, recently when browsing on Thingiverse here - I came across the Customizer App that allowed you to create geometric shapes. As such, it was the PERFECT Starting point. I created the TetraHedra. But, I then took it - and split the sides of each leg. Then - on 2 sides I pushed it outwards - and 2 sides are pushed Inwards. Thus - 2 Tetras will fit together!
I also decided to make the initial ones BIG - so once I 3D Print a BUNCH of them - I could assemble together and make a REALLY Big Sculpture!
My buddy "JetGuy" said - to build a Temporary structure - to plan a sculpture - use Hot Glue gun to put pieces together. Then, you can take them back apart by applying Isopropyl alcohol to the glued joints. That will make them come back apart.
If you want to make them smaller - just reduce size by a percentage and do that for all pieces you print. I also made a smaller stretched piece I call a "foot" - and 3 of them on the bottom of the bottom piece of sculpture will lift it up! But, they are small - and thin - and may or may not hold things up. Will have to experiment more...
Addendum: This Thing has been online for a couple years now. It was originally based upon a Customizer here on TVerse. I attempted to find that original Customizer - I found this one - not sure if its THE One - but, it WILL work: http://www.thingiverse.com/apps/customizer/run?thing_id=233540
In addition, I now added 2 new pics here. In 2017 I finally managed to print ton of the Blocks, between 40-50 of them. So, at my day job I built a simple sculpture - sitting on a white table top, which is the one pic. Then, shortly there after, one of my assistants at my Booth at NYC World Maker Faire 2017 created another sculpture with the blocks - which is the other pic!
