This is the official location where Terry Fox dipped his right leg into the Atlantic Ocean to begin his Marathon of Hope, designated Mile 0. It is built of slate and contains the following inscriptions; 'This slate marks the spot where one man's dream began and where a nation's hope lives on' 'Terry Fox Marathon of Hope, Mile 0, Started April 12, 1980, ended September 1, 1980 after 3,339 miles, just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario (5,373 kilometers)' Near the base there is an etching of Terry and the inscription, 'His run continues always in our nation's soul.' At time of this writing, there is to be a new garden and statue to be erected on this site in the near future.
