If, like me, you wanted to use bigger batteries on your Discovery Endurance build then you probably found that mounting them on the top plate was difficult at best, and the bolt heads would protrude into the battery - not ideal.
These "backpacks" allow you mount bigger batteries on top of your Disco. They provide a flat surface so your batteries aren't damaged, and allow you to use straps to secure them.
The Standard and Pro Discovery have slightly different bolt hole / solder pin layouts, hence the widened front holes so that the plates can fit on either one.
Using an 8000mAh battery on my build I got a 38 minute maximum flight time. You could push that slightly higher with a 10000mAh :) I'm using Hobbywing X-rotor ESCs, Multistar 390kv motors, 15x5 CF props and a Pixhawk.
The OF/LIDAR plate is designed for the PX4FLOW optical flow sensor and the PulsedLight LIDAR Lite v1 rangefinder (though I believe the v2 has the same dimensions).
UPDATED 30/01/16 - rolled the separate Discovery / Discovery Pro plates into single universal plates.
