The mass spectrometer (http://www.ams.uottawa.ca/) counts atoms of some sample material that is placed in a little cup called the target. The target is then screwed on to this base piece and placed in the machine. This is a modified version of the base designed to cool faster. It's got a copper jacket wrapped around a steel pin.
