The Class 450 was first delivered to South West Trains in 2003 in a major purchase of 785 vehicles to replace the old slam-door stock. It is an air-conditioned 4-car multiple unit which is capable of 100mph and can be coupled together with other similar classes of train, although at present is only equipped with third-rail power collection. 450s are used for suburban and occasional long-distance routes and feature 3+2 seating (in second class) and two toilets per unit, one of which is wheelchair-accessible. On shorter routes the trains have been converted to single-class although still have 240 seats, the same as in a two-class configiration.
