The Svendborg Sound Bridge (Svendborg Sund Broen in Danish) runs between the Danish town of Svendborg on the island of Funen (Fyn) to the town of Vindeby on the island of Tåsinge. The bridge is 1216m long and 14.1m wide. The main span provides a clearance of 33m above the water and is 90m wide. It is a concrete hollow box girder bridge. The idea for a bridge was first suggested by civil engineer Anker Engelund in 1938 but the idea was shelved due to the Second World War. It was again raised in the 1950's and planning commenced in the mid 1950's. A tunnel was considered at one stage but was rejected. Construction on the bridge started in 1962 and was finished in 1966 at a total cost of 25 million Danish Crowns (about $5M). The bridge was officially opened by Princess Margrethe on 18th November 1966. Modelled by Peter Olsen, Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney, Australia (Lived in Svendborg from 1969 - 1971) #bridge #bridges #danish_bridges #svendborg #Svendborg_sound_bridge #svendborg_sund_bro #svendborg_sund_broen
