the supermarine spitfire is a british single-seat fighter aircraft that was used by the royal air force and other allied countries before, during, and after world war ii. many variants of the spitfire were built, using several wing configurations. it was also the only british fighter produced continuously throughout the war. the spitfire continues to be popular among enthusiasts; around 70 remain airworthy, and many more are static exhibits in aviation museums throughout the world. different wings, equipped with a variety of, were used on most basic models. there were five types of wings, from type "a" to "e": type a carried eight .303 machine; type b four .303 machine and two 20mm hispano cannons; and the type c: known as the universal wing, it could mount either four 20mm hispano mk.v cannons or two 20mm cannons and four .303 browning light machine. as the war progressed, the c-type became the most common wing. type e carrying two 20mm hispano mk.v cannons and two 12.7mm browning mg.53-2 heavy machine.
