My Redesign project is an astronomically-inspired jewelry piece that additionally functions as a calendar. The sun and moon are present as both visual motifs and key features to the design. The design consists of an internal and external cylinder, which when locked together are flush. An internal cylinder has an upper design with an appearance of a sun. There are fifteen “flares” extruding from the sun, so that all the days of the month can be displayed by inscribing two on each flare (and an extra on one, to accommodate 31 dates). The internal cylinder can be pushed up and rotated, then pushed back in and locked into place by two moon-shaped protrusions on the outer cylinder shaped to fit the curves of the sun. By rotating and locking the cylinder, the date can be adjusted. A loop for a cord highlights the current date. The “flares” are also large enough to prevent the internal cylinder from falling out of the external cylinder. The inner surface of the internal cylinder is left blank so that it can be customized; for example it could be engraved with an image. My project combines visual appeal and functionality in a fun and thematic design.
