Phasers are the most common and standard energy weapon in the arsenal of Starfleet, firing a nadion particle beam formed by passing plasma through a phase emitter, with the intensity and field of the beam producing a wide variety of effects. Starfleet-issue personal hand phasers come in three types, the first being the Type 1, a small, basic weapon used by Starfleet and other Federation personnel when it would be inappropriate to carry a larger weapon, such as on diplomatic missions, or 'undercover' work. This model depicts the first Type 1 phaser developed in the mid 23rd century and issued to Starfleet personnel in the late 2260's. It incorporated a small flip-up sight, and was fired by a trigger on the bottom front of the unit. The Type-1 has eight adjustible settings, ranging from stun to heat through disruption to disintegration. It was also incorporated into the more powerful Type-2 Phaser which was introduced at the same time.
