www.ukrainianvillage.ca St. Nicholas Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church - also known as St. Mary's or Hlus' church (Built: 1912 Restored to: 1928) This country church was built in the rural community of Buczacz, Alberta, by Yarema Yanishewski. While the members of this parish were not particularly wealthy, the church was built with materials that were often better than those in their own homes. In 1917, they hired church artist Peter Lipinsky to paint the interior of the church with traditional images of the eastern Byzantine rite. While the rite required that churches be built with their altars facing east, the church at Buczacz faced the road according to the habit that was more accepted in Canada. During the 1920s, it was served about once a month by travelling priests from the Ukrainian Catholic monastery at Mundare. http://tapor.ualberta.ca/heritagevillage/rural/40/index.php #Alberta #Edmonton #Historic #UCHV
