3D Solutech makes some kick-ass filament but their spools aren't well suited to 8mm threaded rod. Here's a handy insert made specifically for their spools.
Lots of holes to help keep the filament required to a minimum, and should print just fine without supports or a brim.
All my spool designs that aren't built around a 608 bearing are made to print that interior hole at 8mm precisely. This means that on many printers and filaments, due to shrinkage, it's gonna be tight! Be prepared to either thread that spool insert down the rod a couple times or drill it out to the tolerance you like. UPDATE: If you can avoid spool inserts, do it! Try my Penultimate Spool Holder, if you're printing from a flat surface. No more inserting and removing spool hardware and, in the infamous words of Hodd Toward (or Jeve Stobs?) : it "just works". All it takes is four skateboard bearings and a place to stand. Very light, very easy and very application-flexible.
