South Parade Pier was re-built after the fire during filming of the rock opera 'Tommy' in 1974, and was redesigned and open to the public again by 1976. Due to years of poor investment and neglect, By November 2012 the Pier was completely closed and fenced off by Portsmouth City Council as it was a danger to the Public. A couple of days later, the council reopenned the front of the pier. These included part of the arcade and other bits which are actually on land. In December 2012 an attempt to sell the pier at auction failed. By the end of 2013 The Pier was completely closed perminantly due to the continued deterioration of the unsafe structure, and the owners were told that it would only open again once made safe. The repairs never happened and the pier remains fenced off to the public. Parts of the boat deck at the end of South Parade Pier and parts of the superstructure have been broken off after being battered by bad weather on the night of the 5th February 2014. #Pier #Southsea
