This is a Soap Box Derby racer, designed, constructed and driven by 13 year old Gene Ferguson who competed in the Indianapolis, IN local Derby race in 1956. Gene's car was entered as a class A racer in a field of 168 other boys age 13-15, racing in heat 5 as car number 112. He competed the previous year as a class B, ages 10-12. The car is a typical Derby racer of its day, with a boxy design around a tapered plan, with high fore-apron and mid waist sides. The body shell was built for a driver that sat upright in the lean forward position. This model was created from a single color photo, as I wanted to challenge my SketchUp skills by recreating a three dimensional object from one perspective only. The model is a basic creation, fitted with Official Soap Box Derby wheels, and sports a two-tone paint scheme with livery showing the car's sponsor, driver and race number.
