I just uploaded the latest version of the model assembly doc. This doc still needs some work, like annotations on the pictures, etc, but at least it shows all the steps in the construction. Please let me know if there are changes you would recommend.

Here is the long awaited update for the service module which consists of the Solar Array Wings (SAW) pairs at 60 degree angles. Also, the SM thruster base plate has the secondary thrusters as 4 sets of 2, rather then 2 sets of 4.

These parts are:
SM-InteriorShell-Single-V2.stl - Service module adjusted for 60 degree SAW. Also, a mod on the roll and pitch thruster positions. Now only 2 roll thrusters and 4 pitch thrusters in different positions.
SM-ThrusterBase-V2.stl - SM thruster plate modified for secondary thrusters as 4 sets of 2, rather then 2 sets of 4
SM-SpacecraftAdapter-Single-V3.stl - Spcecraft Adapter modified to account for the new SAW positions
SM-PinClipRing-V2.stl - SAW axle holder ring modified for 60 degree SAW
SM-SAWBase-V2.stl - SAW Base for panels as non-hinged, but retain the hinge pattern
SM-SecondaryThrusterSet-V2.stl - The secondary thrusters as a full single print set. Also modified slightly to make it less fragile.

Well, its been a while. So here are a bunch of updates.


OrionCapsule-HeatShieldWithMagnetHole.stl - Capsule Heat Shield with hole for a hidden magnet. This was done along with the SM-AvionicsRingTopWithMagnetHole.stl to more positively connect the capsule with the Service module, rather then just friction and gravity.


SM-AvionicsRingTopWithMagnetHole.stl - Modified with a hole for the magnet.


ICPS-V2-Thruster.stl - revised to be th full nozzle. Previously it was a short version. It also has a surface area on the bottom to help it adhere to the bed. This should be cut out after the print.


SM-PinClipRing.stl - This replaces the tiny clips (SM-Panel-Clip.stl) used to hold the panels on the Service Module. Just print it and drop it in on top of the panel pins. Much easier.


SM-SpacecraftAdapter-V2.stl - This has the top walls increased to allow a tighter connection between the Spacecraft Adapter and the Service module.


Inspired by someone who did a make and had difficulty printing the panel base, I created a version which does not have the hinges. The idea was to allow the panel to be folded (which worked) but when the hinges were used, the panel became limp. So the idea was a failure.


OrionCapsule-ForwardBulkheadSet.stl Slight modifications, I think I made the top cover walls a bit thicker. But this was mainly provided to allow you to print the set, rather than individually.


OrionCapsule-DockingRingAndMainChuteSet.stl - same as item 7. Also the chutes were made slightly smaller to account for the thicker walls.

SM-PanelPinSet.stl - no changes. Just providing a simple set to print.
SM-PitchThrusterSet.stl - no changes. Just providing a simple set to print.
SM-RollThrusterSet.stl - no changes. Just providing a simple set to print.
Update 2/19/2018
I have updated the ICPS-ThrusterLOXSupportCage with a 3 part version ICPS-V2-ThrusterLOXSupportCage based on feedback from someone who works on the SLS program.
The engine was also modified to be closer to what is represented in the actual pictures, not the artist renditions.
Update 2/15/2018
I finished the build of the model using colored filament. The one on the left is the finished version, the one on the right was glued together right off the printer (raw print).
In my opinion, it looks pretty good. I would probably hit the Silver parts with a bright silver spray paint if you want it to pop. Also, I hit the gold ball tank in the Sm with gold paint (not in picture). You can see layering on the Avionics rings when you glue it together. So some sanding there is required.

Also, I have been working with Falk Smilowski who seems to be doing a great job. He is producing the model with the Education Stand. No doubt because he is a Physics and Engineering student. Follow his Make if you want to learn any tricks from a person other then me on the build process. I'm sure he will be updating it as regularly as he can.

Added the detailed interior of the Service Module. It is located at SLS - Service Module Interior.
I decided to break out some additional parts into their own Thing to not clutter up this complete 1/56 scale model.
Update 2/07/2018
For those interested in purchasing this model, rather than printing your own. I will be updating the model kits with the colored filament parts as soon as I find a silver I like. It also comes in a fully assembled and finished form.
A few things since the last update:
I am uploading the parts for the Service Module now. Which means all the parts should be there except for the stand.
I have a good sample of what this model looks like printed using colored filament for the various pieces. I have not glued all the pieces together yet, because I am waiting on the orange and silver filament to be delivered. I have some silver filament, buy they did not seem any better than grey. I also had to do some redesign on the Solar Array Wings to break out the blue parts.

And finally, I went to watch the launch of the SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch yesterday. That was fun!

Update 2/01/2018
As promised, I uploaded all of the ICPS to correspond to the assembly doc. It was a busy day for me, so maybe over the weekend I will start uploading the Service Module or stand.
Additionally, I started a new print. This time I am doing it using the corresponding colors of the parts. So that when it is printed, hopefully, I will just need to assemble it.
Tomorrow, I hope to make contact with someone at NASA to possibly get better measurements for this as well as the next project which is the Curiosity Rover and its upgrades for the Mars 2020 rover. I live about 45 minutes from Kennedy so this should be an easy thing. I'm also looking forward to the launch of the Delta heavy on Tuesday.
I also have to ask again, if someone out there has some contacts for me/this work, please contact me directly.
Update 1/31/2018
Both scale models are now built. They are displayed next to each other so you can figure out which size best suits you. There are a pair of eyeglasses between them to allow a better feel.
I had to redesign the stand grip. It was moved more forward to balance the weight, it is also more aesthetically pleasing.
I will begin loading more parts tomorrow, now that I know they all fit together.

I have all the parts for the 1/75th scale version primed and painted as well as an action stand (not shown). Here is how it is looking.

The parts are grouped according to color, not build relationship. The coloring scheme is my own. Obviously, you may choose different colors. For example, Various renditions of the capsule are black, white or "metallic".

So I decided to spend the day building the model from a new print of the final parts. This is the first time I have done that. All previous models were build, tweak, paint and put in place. So a model has never been built from start to finish. I am doing this to make sure all the pieces are present and fit properly and for "assembly" instructions.

ChiefGlider noticed that several of the parts for the Orion Capsule were 5X larger then they should be. I am updating the STLs now.

I have added the parts for the Orion Crew Module and provided the first pass at the assembly instructions. You will find the PDF instructions in the files section.
It is recommended that you print the Forward Compartment pieces using a .2 mm nozzle at .10 or .15 layer height.
Some of the remaining details:
1) Finish the Assembly Documentation
2) Rename some of the parts to be more accurate
3) Resize and Reorient the parts (some need to be flipped because supports are not required)
The current scale of the models that I am working with are approximately 1/56 and 1/75. I will be publishing the 1/56 scale.
If there are any last minute suggestions, please let me know as soon as possible. I am anxious to move onto the Curiosity Rover and its Mars 2020 upgrades.
Since I am reasonably new to Thingiverse, if there is a proper way to handle a "version 2" of something, let me know. Should I create a new thing (like I am doing now) or update the previous version in some way?
Also, should I treat this as one big model with (n) parts or should I break out each module into a separate thing Orion, Service Module, ICPS, stands, etc?
Any constructive input is appreciated.
