In 2016 I had a project for one of my university assignments, the primary goal was to establish some kind of online web presence, a colleague and I came up with the presence called "Where the Science Happens" or WSH, the goal was to show using VR 360 degree navigatable panorama style images to showcase the spaces that scientists work in.
The project was a failure however the result was an interesting learning and design experience in Virtual Reality and Imaging.
A week of digital design resulted in a VR Rig design with the goals that it must be:
Fits and utilizes the cheap action camera style clone SJCAM
Full 360 Degree View
Uses 6 cameras
Tripod Mountable
Easily 3D Printable
Use as little material as possible
built in ports for charging and SD Card access
The overall design is based on a cube with chamfered corners and edges and consists of 3 pieces that make up the overall design, it uses knurled inserts to allow screws for securing the intersections of different parts, the design was rushed due to time restriction and lacks refinement in a lot of areas, however due to alternative projects I have released the design files online.
The FacePlate - Responsible for housing the insertable cameras and has the most area of the object
Corner Hex Plates - there consists of 3 different hex plates a blank connecting piece, one with 2 holes for access to the USB ports on the cameras and a third that has a connecting screw for the tripod.
Flat Edges - these mainly are connecting piece designed for rigidity.
I hope that others may be able to improve and remix this design to improve it, I hope to find some time to enable the installation of a few of the ideas I had in particular an integrated USB Hub that allows charging of all cameras from the mains as well as accessing all SD Cards at once and possibly some kind of script/program that grabs and stitches all photos together.
