The purpose of the car was to travel a distance of 2.5m only using a battery powered motor and propeller and wheels. The way the car works is that once the switch is flipped on the propeller the chemical potential energy of the battery gets converted to electrical energy and flows along the wires. As it flows the wires heat up and some of the electrical energy is converted to the thermal energy in the wires. Then the electrical energy is converted to mechanical kinetic energy of the motor as it spins the shaft which in turn spins the propeller. As the propeller spins it has kinetic energy so some of the mechanical energy gets lost as its converted to this kinetic energy. As the propellers spin they push against the air which in turn push back against the propeller(and the car) creating thrust which provides the force for the car to move. As the car moves from this thrust force it gets mechanical kinetic energy due to the fact that it’s moving. Though as it’s moving there is a drag force on it and friction between the wheels and the ground. Both the drag and the friction cause some of the energy for the car to move(the thrust) to be turned into thermal energy as the air and ground heat up slightly from the drag and friction.
The goal of this project was to be able to both measure these forces than using equations calculate the forces we weren’t able to measure. We were then supposed to be able to apply this knowledge to any set of numbers such as the ones provided on the test.
